About this role

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to lead the MPS Criminal Finance & Payback Teams at Senior Leadership level, shaping the strategic direction of criminal finance investigations and delivering a critical function that disrupts serious and organised crime. We welcome applications from Band C and Band B members of police staff with proven strategic leadership experience in criminal finance, asset recovery and financial investigation.

Reporting within the Economic and Cyber Crime OCU, you will lead the Criminal Finance and Payback Strand, setting direction, driving performance and enhancing the MPS’s capability to identify, investigate and recover criminal assets under POCA.

The Criminal Finance and Payback Teams deliver specialist financial investigation capabilities, leading and supporting both BCUs and specialist OCUs through asset recovery and the development of financial intelligence.

At a strategic level, you will shape and drive the MPS approach to asset recovery – working in close collaboration with internal and external partners including Specialist Crime, Counter Terrorism, City of London Police, the NCA, HRMC, Home Office, CPS and private sector financial partners.

You will have direct leadership responsibility for

• 4 Criminal Finance Teams (Putney, Lewisham, Hendon, Barking)
• Delivery and Expansion of 12 Payback Teams across BCUs (2 established with phased rollout through 2026/27)

You will be based at Cobalt Square, Vauxhall but expected to regularly visit the 4 CFT and Payback sites across London.

Key Responsibilities

• Set strategic priorities for Criminal Finance and Payback Teams, driving effective use of POCA powers and asset recovery across the MPS.
• Lead performance, accountability and continuous improvement across all teams
• Drive innovation in financial investigation techniques and asset recovery methodologies.
• Oversee complex asset recovery and confiscations, both proactive and in support of wider policing operations.
• Make informed decisions on prioritisation, resourcing and operational direction.
• Ensure the effective development and deployment of intelligence, including sensitive material
• Direct line Management of two Detective Inspectors and leadership of wider teams, comprising of both police officers and police staff.
• Lead workforce planning, recruitment and professional development across all sites.
• Visible leadership at the CFT and Payback sites
• Represent the MPS at senior leadership forums, including ROCU and NPCC groups
• Build and sustain effective relationships with BCUs, OCUs and National/international partners
• Liaise directly with BCU SLT to support the rollout and embedding of Payback Teams
• Identify and manage strategic and operational risks
• Briefing senior officers around on emerging threats and performance.
• Ensure compliance with legislative, policy, and professional standards frameworks.

The salary is broken down as £ 59,301, basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £72,254. Plus, a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.
