Information Services Division (ISD) is the primary provider of IT services to UCL. We support and enhance learning, teaching, research and administrative processes by providing information- and technology-related services to over 50,000 staff and students of UCL and associated institutions. Our ambition is to be the leading IT services group in the HE sector and we are growing our team’s capability in experience/UX, agile development, security, cloud, service management and partnering.

We are modernising our technology foundations, digitising the processes of the university to transform experience for students and staff, and partnering across the university to drive differentiation in UCL education and research. Within ISD, the Information Security Group works across the university to protect UCL and the amazing work it does in education and research. ISG sets security standards, provides advice and guidance, and responds to incidents working with a "how to" rather than "Don't do" mindset.

This role is within the Governance, Risk, and Compliance function of the UCL Information Security Group. We are seeking a Lead Information Security Officer to serve as the Head of a new Information Security Consulting Team.

The role holder will help to set the security standards for the university and then lead their team in helping all of UCL meet these standards. The traditional security approach of telling people "what not to do" does not meet the needs of a fast moving research university.

The role holder will mentor junior team members and work to build on the security knowledge of key teams. Both providing security support and helping teams understand their security responsibilities.

The role holder can expect to work with core central IT teams, departmental teams, and researchers across the university.

About you

What you will bring

• Significant experience working in a GRC role at a large complex organisation
• In depth knowledge of information security and the ability to explain it to non-security and non-technical colleagues
• Ability to build confidence and trust with stakeholders at all levels of the university
• Willingness to share your knowledge and experience with the rest of the team. Especially helping junior colleagues develop and grow
• Able to think strategically for the long term but also see what needs to be done now
• Experience working on change programmes both security focused ones and broader IT or organisational change programmes
• A passion for working at an organisation that expands our knowledge of everything from the structure of the universe to the treatment of previously incurable conditions
