Your policing background has given you strong analytical and investigative skills, which are directly applicable to identifying and prioritising vulnerabilities. You are used to following structured processes and documenting findings, which aligns with the discipline required in vulnerability management. However, this role demands deep technical expertise in tools like Qualys and Tenable, as well as a solid understanding of patch management and secure configuration, which are not typically developed in frontline policing roles.

Your experience in incident command, investigative methodology, and evidence handling directly supports the core incident response lifecycle. The ability to manage high-pressure situations, coordinate multi-agency responses, and conduct methodical root cause analysis mirrors the discipline you developed in policing. However, this role demands deep technical expertise in SIEM, EDR, and digital forensics tools that most ex-officers would need substantial retraining to acquire, making it a realistic but challenging transition for those with a cybercrime or digital forensics background.

These roles are highly technical ICT positions — security engineering, cloud architecture, data science — that require specialist certifications and deep commercial experience. Your policing background in managing incidents or gathering digital evidence does not substitute for the hands-on engineering skills these jobs demand, and most ex-officers would need years of retraining to be competitive.
