The translation trap is letting "custody" read as "jailer". Frame it as accountable management of a 24/7 secure facility, because that's what it was.

- Meticulous record-keeping where the record is the defence.
Say it in their language
- "Custody sergeant" → "Accountable manager of a 24/7 secure facility processing X,000 detainees a year: risk assessment, staff supervision, statutory compliance".
- "Dealt with violent detainees" → "Managed violence-reduction and safe-restraint practice in a high-risk environment, with zero serious-harm incidents on shift" (only if true — and it usually is).
- "PACE compliance" → "operated a statutory compliance regime with personal legal accountability — reviews, rights and welfare checks to the minute".
Licences and quick wins
- NHS violence-prevention roles: cite conflict-management and physical-intervention training by name; an LSMS qualification can follow in post.
- IOSH Managing Safely rounds out a facilities-management application quickly.
- For secure-transport and immigration-sector roles, your restraint and safeguarding training map across — list the specific courses.
- Mental-health awareness training (or better, real experience with detained vulnerable people, which you have) is a stated requirement in most of these adverts.
