Overview

Your shift command, incident response and people management experience from policing are directly transferable to leading a campus security team.

About this role

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

With a vibrant community of over 23,000 students and 2,400 staff, Liverpool John Moores University is one of the largest, most dynamic and forward-thinking universities in the UK. Our Campus Support (Security) team plays a vital role in keeping our university safe, welcoming and open for everyone who studies, works and visits here.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Team Leader to join the Campus Support Team within Campus Services at Liverpool John Moores University.

You will provide day to day leadership on shift, working closely with the Campus Support Supervisor to keep the team focused, motivated and delivering a consistently high standard of service. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys coaching and developing people, and who can bring calm, consistent leadership to a busy, fast moving environment.

You will support your supervisor in setting clear expectations, addressing performance and conduct issues fairly and directly when they arise, and helping the team pull together at what is an important time of development for the department. You will be a visible presence on shift, leading by example and building trust with your colleagues.

In the absence of the supervisor, you will take on full responsibility for the shift, so you will need to be confident making decisions and comfortable being accountable for the team's performance.

For this role it is essential that you hold a full UK driving licence with a maximum of 3 penalty points. You will also be required to demonstrate flexibility due to the shift pattern and respond to variations in business patterns in support of colleagues and customers.

About You

You will have a background in security or a similarly regulated, customer facing environment, ideally gained in a voluntary, retail or public sector organisation, giving you credibility with a team that knows the job inside out. You will be a natural coach and mentor, able to bring colleagues with you rather than simply direct them, and confident having honest conversations when standards slip.

You will be firm but fair: someone who deals with issues promptly and consistently, supports your supervisor rather than working around them, and helps build a settled, high performing team. You will bring excellent communication skills, sound judgement, and the resilience to stay calm under pressure. In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

LJMU values diversity and provides a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can fulfil their potential.

Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
