Civilian Careers for Ex-Detectives (PIP2)

Reviewed July 2026

Detectives have the smoothest exit from policing, and most don't realise it. PIP2 accreditation means you ran serious investigations end-to-end: strategy, interviews, evidence, disclosure, court. Civilian employers spend years failing to teach that.

The catch is vocabulary. "OIC", "MG forms", "PIP2" mean nothing outside the job. This guide covers the four sectors that hire ex-detectives hardest and the translation that gets you shortlisted.

What you're actually selling

  • End-to-end case ownership — allegation to disposal, often 15–20 concurrent cases, each one audited.
  • PEACE interviewing — a recognised, transferable methodology for suspects, victims and reluctant witnesses.
  • Evidence and disclosure discipline (CPIA) — the habit of building files that survive hostile scrutiny.
  • Decision logging — every line of enquiry justified in writing; compliance and legal teams call this an audit trail.
  • Working with lawyers — charging advice, court, cross-examination. You are already comfortable where most investigators are not.

Say it in their language

  • "OIC for burglary/assault series" → "Owned complex investigations end-to-end, setting strategy, directing enquiries and presenting evidence-based findings to legal review".
  • "PIP2 accredited" → spell it out: "nationally accredited to lead serious and complex investigations".
  • "Prepared case files" → "Produced disclosure-compliant evidential files subject to defence and judicial scrutiny".
  • "Interviewed suspects" → "Planned and conducted investigative interviews under the PEACE model, including obstructive and legally represented subjects".

Licences and quick wins

  • The ACFE's Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) is the fastest credibility badge for fraud and corporate investigation roles.
  • For financial-crime routes, an ICA certificate in AML sits well next to detective experience.
  • Recent NPPV or SC vetting shortens onboarding for outsourced-policing and government-adjacent investigation work — mention it.
  • Insurance investigation values a clean driving licence and surveillance awareness more than further qualifications.
