Civilian Careers for Accredited Financial Investigators (AFIs)
Reviewed July 2026
Financial investigation is a licence-to-print CV line if you translate it. AFIs used POCA powers civilians can only read about — production orders, account freezing, restraint, confiscation — and that operational fluency with the money-laundering regime is exactly what banks, consultancies and recovery firms are short of.
One honest caveat: AFI accreditation itself is tied to the NCA's regime and doesn't follow you out. The experience does, and the private sector knows precisely what an AFI is because they answer your production orders.
What you're actually selling
- Money-flow tracing across accounts, companies and crypto — with court-tested methods.
- POCA in practice: restraint, confiscation, cash and account forfeiture. Recovery firms sell this as a service.
- Financial profiling: reconstructing income, lifestyle and hidden assets from fragmentary records.
- The reporting regime from the receiving end — what makes a SAR useful, what banks get wrong.
- Presenting financial evidence to non-specialists: juries, magistrates, and soon, your MLRO.
Say it in their language
- "AFI" → "NCA-accredited financial investigator (POCA): asset tracing, restraint and confiscation casework" — expand it once, then use it.
- "Confiscation casework" → quantify: "identified and restrained criminal assets exceeding £X across Y cases".
- "Obtained banking evidence" → "drafted and executed production and account-monitoring orders across all major UK banks".
Licences and quick wins
- ICA Diploma in AML or Financial Crime Prevention — the compliance-side badge; AFIs typically find it straightforward.
- ACFE CFE for the investigation-side route.
- R3 (insolvency) awareness helps for asset-recovery practices attached to insolvency firms.
- Crypto-tracing exposure (Chainalysis/TRM training if you had it) is currently the highest-premium line you can add.
