Civilian Careers After Roads Policing & Collision Investigation
Reviewed July 2026
Roads policing produces two sellable specialisms at once. Collision investigation is forensic evidence work — scene examination, vehicle examination, reconstruction, expert testimony — that insurers, lawyers and consultancies buy at a premium. And the operational side is fleet risk and transport compliance experience that logistics employers need every day.
Decide which half leads your CV; the guide below covers both.
What you're actually selling
- Forensic scene examination and evidence recovery under time pressure, on live carriageways.
- Collision reconstruction — physics applied to liability, written up for court and defended under cross-examination.
- Expert-witness experience: the single most valuable line for litigation-support roles.
- Fraud recognition — staged collisions, exaggerated claims, cloned vehicles — direct currency in insurance investigation.
- Road transport law in practice: tachographs, licensing, prohibitions — the compliance backbone of fleet operations.
Say it in their language
- "Forensic collision investigator" → keep the title, add the translation: "court-qualified expert in collision reconstruction and liability analysis".
- "Policed the strategic road network" → "Managed incident response and safety compliance across a major-route network, coordinating recovery, closures and multi-agency response".
- "Dealt with commercial vehicle offences" → "Enforced operator-licensing and driver-hours compliance — the same regime fleet operators must satisfy".
Licences and quick wins
- If you hold collision-investigation qualifications (e.g. UCFCI units), list them in full — insurers and consultancies recognise them.
- A Transport Manager CPC converts roads knowledge into a formal fleet-operations credential quickly.
- IOSH/NEBOSH suit the fleet-risk and driver-safety route.
- For insurance work, target counter-fraud teams (IFED-adjacent language helps) rather than generic claims handling.
