Contract: Full‑time, permanent
We’re looking for a proactive and knowledgeable Compliance Manager to ensure our retail stores operate safely, legally, and responsibly. You’ll oversee compliance across food safety, health & safety, licensing, and security, supporting store teams and protecting colleagues, customers, and the business.
This is a hands‑on role that will grow as the function develops. Over time, you’ll lead a team of Risk Officers, providing coaching, oversight, and consistent standards across the estate.
Key Responsibilities
- Safe & Legal Operations — Ensure stores comply with food hygiene, health & safety, and licensing legislation.
- Audits & Inspections — Conduct regular store audits, identify risks, and implement corrective actions.
- Enforcement Management — Liaise with local authorities, EHO, and Trading Standards.
- Incident Support — Provide expert advice on investigations, incidents, and compliance issues.
- Record Keeping — Maintain accurate documentation and ensure timely reporting.
- Risk Leadership — Build a proactive safety culture across the retail network.
- Coaching & Training — Support Regional and Store Managers with risk awareness and safe practices.
- Technical Guidance — Act as the main point of contact for compliance queries.
- Ethical Leadership — Model accountability and responsible decision‑making.
- Team Development — Recruit, train, and manage Risk Officers as the function grows.
- Performance Oversight — Set objectives, monitor standards, and ensure consistent audit quality.
- Field Coordination — Ensure timely response to incidents and enforcement actions.
- Stakeholder Engagement — Work closely with Retail, HR, and Facilities teams.
- External Partnerships — Build relationships with pest control, waste management, and security providers.
- Reporting & Insights — Analyse trends and share recommendations with senior leadership.
- Regulatory Representation — Attend regulatory meetings and enforcement discussions.
Skills & Experience
- 5+ years in retail risk, compliance, or health & safety.
- Strong knowledge of food hygiene, health & safety, and licensing legislation.
- Experience conducting audits and managing enforcement activity.
- Confident coaching and influencing operational leaders.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- NEBOSH or equivalent qualification (desirable).
- Ability to travel extensively across the retail estate.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience developing teams or functions.
